This interactive PowerPoint presentation provides students with a fun explanation of how each of the Progressive verb tenses (Present Progressive, Past Progressive, and Future Progressive) work. An animated cat explains when each tense is useful, and provides multiple concrete examples of how to use it. (The explanations clarify when to use the present or past progressive as opposed to the simple present or simple past, a source of great confusion for many students). The first part of the show runs automatically, and then there are road signs to click on so that the teacher can present the lesson at whatever pace is needed, stopping for further clarification when necessary. There is no sound in the presentation--except a short clip of music that plays when the cat is giving feedback to students for getting an answer wrong or right. This way, the teacher can read the part of the cat, and/or have students read the example sentences. The show is 42 slides long, and will take approximately 30 minutes to present, depending on how much discussion there is of the examples, and how long the students take to answer the interactive quiz questions. The interactive presentation can be done as a whole class activity at the SMARTboard, or at an individual computer so students can check their understanding during writing centers. I have also provided an additional 20 question PDF handout that can be used as a follow-up assessment.
This presentation is aligned to meet Common Core Standard L.4.1.B, but it can be used as a review for ESL students of any age (as long as they don’t mind the cuteness of the cat graphics)!
You might have to click on “Read Only” the first time you start the show, but after that it will run automatically until you get to the first image of a road sign. At that point, you can go through at your own pace by clicking, or simply using the arrow keys on your computer keyboard. (If you accidentally advance too quickly and want to go back to review something, you can always use the back arrow on your keyboard).
