It seems like they are everywhere! They live all over the world and from the mountains to the swampy lands of Florida. It's hard to believe there are only eight different types in the entire world?
With Bears Everywhere
, students will travel around the world researching bears and collecting information on how they live, survive, and thrive. When the journey is complete that's when the designing begins --because they'll be creating a sanctuary and habitat center for bears.
There are 25 activities (1 page for each on most) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research and it integrates elements of research, ELA, design, and planning as students learn about bears from all around the world and culminates with designing a bear sanctuary/center.
As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on user’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.
Students are introduced to the subject they’ll be learning about--bears! There is also a one page survey for students to take on how they feel about bears.
Students brainstorm everything they know about bears.
11 Bear Necessities
Students write/draw the definitions on two pages of vocabulary words that deal with bears.
13 Eight Bear Types
Students research the eight bear types in the world. There is a page for each bear that includes maps and information they must find for each one.
Students research adaptations that bears have for the habitats they live in.
23 Around the World
Students identify the locations where all the bears live in the world.
24 Compare The Bears
Students use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two of the bears they have learned about.
25 Case For Bears
Students research/write why bears are a crucial part of the environment and ecosystems that they live in.
26 Bears In The Park
Students research how people should treat bears when they visit parks or areas where bears are/could be present.
28 Catching Salmon
Students research and illustrate how bears catch fish (salmon) in the wild.
29 Threat To Polar Bears
Students research why polar bear populations continue to dwindle in the wild and what the causes are (human interactions, climate change, oil drilling).
Students illustrate and share 2 “pictures” from their travels as they studied bears around the world on the bear-sharing social media platform.
31 Food Chain
Students create three food chains for the polar, brown, and giant panda.
33 Life of a Bear
Students write a single page narrative story of the life/day of a bear, from the perspective of any bear they choose.
34-53 The Bear Sanctuary
Students will create and design a BEAR SANCTUARY and CENTER. This includes a to-do list with nine steps that are involved. Students will create and design the center, fill job positions, design a webpage, and more.
35 To-Do List
This list includes a checklist for students to follow as they create the center.
36 Make It Official
Students decide on names, motto, and logos. These can later be used for marketing purposes on websites or in the park.
37 The Entrance
Students design a captivating entrance when visitors walk in.
Students dedicate the center to someone/something and write why they have chosen to do so. They can chose whatever or whomever they think is important to them.
39 Additional Animals
The center will have more than just four bears, so students will have to decide what other animals could be part of this center.
40 Job Positions
Students pick classmates that will fill positions at the center.
Students design two pages from their center’s webpage.
42 About the Bears
Students pick FOUR bears that will be at the exhibit and must write an informational paragraph about each one.
44 The Design
Students will design the center layout and close-ups of 4 bear exhibits.
45 Design Checklist
Checklist is provided to guide students as they create the Center Layout and Close-Ups
46 Layouts & Close-Ups
The rough draft of the center, bear close-ups, and final draft are provided for students to complete. There are also extra sheets of graph paper for students that choose to create a center that is larger than a single sheet of paper.
54 Problem Solver
Students answer questions on how they would solve problems that arise at the center.
57 Student Reflection
Students fill out a reflection rubric on how they felt about this project and how they did on it.
58 Extension Ideas
A page of extension ideas are included to take this PBL even further with students.
All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions. Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
