Project Based Learning Activity: Habitats Around the World, Build An App
In this PBL activity, students will create an app about a habitat. They will choose the habitat, do the research, and develop/design an app. The app showcases how they can synthesize and share information with others.
This packet will walk students through the steps of designing the app. When it is complete each student will have their own personal version and vision of the app. There are also blank app pages for students who have other ideas that they would like to continue working on.
The app will be paper-based. Students will create a flip-book style app. However, they may choose to get creative and add more features (if you allow).
Each page will contain two parts:
The top half: RESEARCH.
-This will be for research purposes, and students can write down information they find. It’s also for notes.
The bottom half: APP.
-This side will be for students to take the research and create a page for the app based on the content they find.
Students will also create an app cover, table of contents, and a credits page. The app may be created vertically or horizontally. There will be blank pages included for students that would like to add even more.
As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.
All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.
Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
7 Title Page/introduction
Students learn that they’ll be creating an app to teach others about habitats around the world.
8-11 Habitat Brainstorm
Four separate pages for students to brainstorm different types of habitats around the world. This inlcudes the 6 main types on a single page, and then 3 more pages for more specific habitats.
12 Habitat Selection
Students pick the specific habitat they would like to research and learn about. The habitat does not have to be from the list, but teachers get the final decision.
13 Create the Cover
Students create a cover for the app. They may choose to complete this at the end of the project after they have learned about all the parts of the habitat they choose.
14 About the Habitat: Climate
Students do research on the climate of the habitat, such as weather, temperatures, rainfall, and more.
15, 16 About the Habitat: Land
Students research the land such as plants/trees, landforms, and even where habitat famous locations are.
17-19 About the Habitat: Animals
Students research the types of animals that are found in this habitat, adaptions by some animals to survive, and food webs and chains in the habitats.
20-21 Where in the World
Students highlight prominent areas around the world where this habitat can be found.
22 Threat Level
Students research conservation methods to save these habitats.
Students share their habitats via Habigram, the social media platform, to raise awareness for these places.
24 Table of Contents
Students create a table of contents for all the pages they used in their app. This should be completed at the end, so they know all the pages they’ve done. It can be placed second (behind the cover) when the app is put together.
The CREDITS page is the FINAL page. Students will create a page with credits such as who they are, what they used for research, and anything else that needs to be credited.
26 Extra Pages
This is a set of extra pages for students that would like to continue.
27-29 Problem Solver
Included are two pages of reflection questions for students to think about and answer regarding their animal, conservation, and saving the environment.
This is a set of images that show how the APP is put together.
