Project Based Learning Activity: Plan Thanksgiving Dinner
This project takes elements of math, writing, and reading grocery advertisements to create the perfect Thanksgiving dinner.
Students will have a set budget and must buy at least 11 items to create their perfect meal. This can be done using the provided grocery ads or using “real” newspaper/grocery store ads.
There are two levels of Meal Preparation:
-The first level includes students finding food items and making it fit within their budget. It would be considered a basic level.
-The second level takes this meal prep further. Using REAL ads students must buy multiple (pounds, items) based on a six-person meal and includes a conversion sheet.
The higher level will work more effectively if students use real ads from newspapers or online. Included is a Symbaloo page with direct links to over 10 grocery stores and their ad page.
There are two versions of grocery ads provided, but teachers are encouraged to use “real” ads found in the newspaper/mail or online.
There are 10 activities for students to work through, but the teacher can choose how expansive they would like the project to be.
Students learn what they’ll be tasked with completing, including a list of other activities they could complete.
Students discuss and brainstorm their favorite meals and food.
10-12 Meal Plan and Budget
Students are given a budget by their teacher, buy at least 11 items using the provided grocery advertisements included in this pack or use real ads.
-There are two versions of this, one basic and higher level. Teachers can choose which would work best for each student.
The higher will work more effectively if students use real ads from newspapers or online. Included is a Symbaloo page with direct links to over 10 grocery stores and their ad page.
13, 14 Food Planning
Students write their shopping list on this page, along with prices.
15-17 Food BreakDown
Students separate their foods into groups, find totals, and prepare to graph them.
18 Create A Dish
Students write (in four steps) how to create their perfect dish.
19 Best Dinner Ever
Students write a short story about the best dinner they’ve ever had.
Students share a couple of photos of their meal via the social media titan, Instagobble.
21, 22 Food Planning, Expensive & Cheap
Students are challenged to see if they can create the cheapest and most expensive meals based on the included grocery ad, when buying the eleven items for a meal.
23, 24 Coupon Clipping
These are optional pages to print out, which allow students to glue their grocery ad choices to. Students can then refer back for prices or other ideas.
25, 26 Grocery Advertisement
Students can use this grocery advertisement if they do not have access to newspaper ads or online ads. These ads can also be used for the Food Planning, Cheap & Expensive challenge. This add includes decimal points in the dollar prices.
27, 28 Grocery Advertisement, No Decimals
This is a second version that DOES NOT include decimal points on the prices. Everything is whole dollars.
29-33 Projectibles or Printables
This includes four projectibles or printables for students to see as a reference for completing this project.
As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.
All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.
Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
