Product Description
Project Based Learning Activity: Run A Toy Drive.

This project takes elements of math, writing, budgeting, and using store ads to create the perfect toy drive.

Students will buy toys for kids using store ads and work within a set budget decided by (you) the teacher. This can be done using the provided toy ads, or have students “real” newspaper/ store ads different retail stores.

There are two versions of store ads provided, but teachers are encouraged to use “real” ads found in the newspaper/mail or online. (Many stores have huge amounts of unwanted ads just sitting at the front of their stores. Or have students bring in their own set.)

There are two versions of included ads. One has whole dollars and the other includes decimals, making for easier differentiation.

There are 10 activities for students to work through, but the teacher can choose how expansive they would like the project to be. Each student’s activities will be different from their neighbors based on the decisions they make through the project.

7 Introduction
Students learn that they’ll be taking part in a toy drive.

8 BrainStorm
Students discuss and brainstorm the best toys out in the stores right now.

9,10 Budget
Students are given a budget by their teacher, buy at least 14 toys.

11,12 Toy Pricing
Students have two pricing sheets to use to keep track of all toys they purchase.

13-15 Toy BreakDown
Students separate their toys purchased into groups, find totals, and prepare to graph them.

16 Greatest Toy Ever
Students write a story about the greatest toys they have.

17 Instagift Students share a couple of photos of children opening the gifts with the new toys they received.

18 Invent a Toy
Students are challenged to see if they can create a new toy.

19 Promote the drive
Students create a poster to promote the toy drive.

20 Importance of giving
Students write a letter in the newspaper about why the toy drives are important.
21 something for yourself
Students fill out a list of toys that they’d like to have for themselves.

22, 23 Toy Clippings
Extra worksheets for students to cut out ads with the toy and price (if needed).

24-27 Toy Store Ad
Students may use these sheets as a toy store ad, instead of a real ad found in newspapers, online, or in a store.

Version 1: Includes decimals.
Version 2: No decimals.

As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.

Students may choose to use multiple resources to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, but you get final say on that.
