PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Engage your students throughout the school year with relevant projects where they can apply a variety of skills from math and language arts. This bundle includes 6 projects:

Design an Aquarium

Engage your students in a relevant project where they can apply a variety of skills. Skills in this activity:
*Area

Giving a Presentation

Students write a proposal, plan a budget for purchasing fish and tanks, and set up their aquarium model. They purchase gravel and other decorative accessories for the tanks. The project culminates with a poster presentation where students share their plans and complete budget.

Design a Dog House

Students work in teams or individually to design a dog house. A variety of math skills are practiced including area,volume, measurement conversions, addition, subtraction, and multiplication. ELA skills are also integrated as students write persuasive letters and give oral presentations on their creations. Giving students relevant contexts to apply skills is a meaningful way for students to construct conceptual understanding and see a useful application. Appropriate for grades 4-6.

Operation Decorate

Students are engaged in planning the holiday decorating of a children's home. A variety of math and language skills are built into this relevant project. This is a great cooperative group activity, or can be done individually. Editable price pages allow you to customize for your students needs. Here's what's included in this experience:
Activity 1: Descriptive Writing Student reflect on their own experiences and preferences for holiday decorations and write a descriptive paragraph. This will help students with decisions in activity 2.
Activity 2: Decorations Budget Students use a specific budget to make decisions on which decorations they will purchase.
Activity 3: How Many Strands?: Students use measurement and conversion skills to calculate the number of light strands they will need.
Activity 4: That’s A Wrap: Students calculate the volume of different boxes to ensure donated gifts will fit. They also calculate surface area of boxes to make sure they have enough wrapping paper.
Activity 5: You’re Invited: Students use a budget to plan a reception for the kids living in the children’s home. They also design invitations.
Activity 6: Group Presentations with Grading Rubric: Teams create and present posters detailing their decoration plans. A optional grading rubric is included.

Thanksgiving Feast

Engage your students in this relevant project where they plan a Thanksgiving feast. From calculating serving sizes and calories from real food labels, to making a shopping list and sticking to a budget. This project helps students see the real life uses for a variety of math skills. Editable price tags allow you to differentiate for your students. Activities included in this product:
Activity 1: Making A Shopping List: Student read real food labels to find serving size on a variety of Thanksgiving dinner foods. They then calculate how many of each item they will need to purchase to feed 20 people.
Activity 2: Let’s Go Shopping: Students use price information for each item and the quantities they calculated in Activity 1 to figure out the cost of their Thanksgiving Feast.
Activity 3: Budgeting For Extras: Students use a budget to purchase extra items for Thanksgiving such as candles and napkins.
Activity 4: Setting The Table: Students use creativity and some geometry skills to come up with different table arrangements to fit 20 people.
Activity 5: Let’s Get Cookin’: Students use information on cooking times to make sure all items will be ready at the same time.
Activity 6: Counting Calories: Students use the Food labels to calculate the number of calories for different guests.
Activity 7: The Beautiful Feast: After all the hard work and planning, students draw a picture of their Thanksgiving Feast.

Dog Sled Race

This project allows students to use a variety of math and language skills in a relevant simulation. They will plan, prepare, and race in a Dog Sled Race. Here's a list of the different activities included in this project:

Activity 1: Your Team: Students create their dog team. They draw pictures of each of their 6 dogs and name them. They also develop a team logo.
Activity 2: Sled Dog Care: Students read a passage describing the needs of their sled dogs. They follow up by answering questions related to the cost of care.
Activity 3: Dress For Success: Students calculate their budget for the necessary clothing for dog sled racing.
Activity 4: Equipment Round Up: Students choose from a variety of equipment they will need and stick to a budget. They also write about their reasons for choosing the items.
Activity 5: Planning the Route: Students use a trail map and distance chart to plan their route. They answer questions
Activity 6: Post Cards From the Trail: Students create and write a postcard to a friend describing their adventures on the trail.
Activity 7: On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!: Students use their time telling skills to answer questions about their race time.
Activity 8: Photo Finish: Students use measurement conversions to determine the winner of the race.

Design a Dog Park

Students work in teams to design a dog park. A variety of math skills are practiced including area, perimeter, addition, subtraction, multiplication. ELA skills are also integrated as students write persuasive letters and give oral presentations on their proposals. Giving students relevant contexts to apply skills is a meaningful way for students to construct conceptual understanding and see a useful application.
