As the year begins, let your students enjoy learning about the new procedures and rules of your classroom by completing a project that incorporates STEM activities into a fun, get-to-know-you cooperative learning project. Students will create their own board games that highlight the key procedures and rules you've shared with them in a step-by-step project that guides them through the engineering process.
This activity will take away the boredom from the initial 'rules and regulations talk' you have to give and let them share what they've learned in a way they'll remember your rules all year! You'll see how your students interact with each other and solve their own 'problems' as they learn. You'll integrate basic STEM philosophy into your curriculum as well! Also included is a grading rubric (students can use it to plan and execute their projects before submitting them).
The completed game boards will also make great displays at your first Open House event, and you can even let your students lead the event by sharing their games and letting parents play, too!
