Product Description

In this PBL experience, the focus is on creating environmental awareness of either 1. the decline of honeybees, 2. an invasive species, or 3. ocean cleanup. Students will choose whether to create a podcast, social media campaign, or children's book. The following is provided in this resource:

  • Teacher notes: planning day to day, keeping track of group progress, and tips
  • Project description: Topics, focus, methods of completion (podcast, social media campaign, children's book)
  • Checkpoints
    • Checkpoint 1: Assigning groups and roles within the group
    • Checkpoint 2: Decisions, decisions... Choosing the project
    • Checkpoint 3: Branding: Students create logo, title, and slogan for their campaign
    • Checkpoint 4: Getting started: Organizing research topics
    • Checkpoint 5: Project Planning
    • Project Progression: To be used as needed for check-ins with each team.

  • List of websites for students to use for research
  • Information Log Sheet for students
  • Presentation Critique
  • Grading Rubric

You will need to have computers for research and technology capabilities to allow students to record a podcast, shoot a video, make a poster, and create a children's book.

The final product is the focus of this project. This is a true PBL activity. If you're looking for a polished, specific outcome, don't do this.

PBL teaches the unspoken curriculum, in addition to the spoken. Through research, teamwork, and presentation, students will gain insight into multiple environmental situations present in our society. They will also communicate with one another, use technology - possibly in a new way - , work as a team, and produce a final, genuine product.

Enjoy teaching again.
