Description

This high school current events project experience is a great way to study local and global issues as well as introduce self-directed project-based learning!

Students will choose one current event topic of interest and design a self-directed project-based learning lesson plan around that topic using the guiding materials included in this resource.

Students will work within the community, complete a project final product of their choosing (ideas available), and give an authentic presentation (ideas available). These are several important components of self-directed PBL.

This resource was designed to save you a ton of time AND keep learners engaged in personalized learning experiences. Because the experience is self-directed, students design their own experiences. You don't have to develop a lesson plan and guiding materials for students have been created for you.

How to Use this Resource:

  • The resource theme - current events - can be applied to ANY subject-based class. Students can focus their current events search on specific subjects or topics.
  • You can assign this project as a stand-alone project. Students work on this project and only this project until they are done. OR you can have students work on this PBL alongside other projects or learning activities. I do the latter.
  • This PBL could be done in small groups or independently, but I highly encourage teams, as this is an excellent way to build classroom culture.
  • This is a great learning activity for advisories as well.
  • This is an excellent way to differentiate learning. Self-directed PBL is personalized. This resource also includes extension activity ideas for early finishers.
