Product Description
Students will be engaged in the project based learning process as they question, research, plan, improve and present. They will learn about what it takes to go on a successful hike and build a hiking survival kit.

Students will learn about what they would need to pack for a hike.

Students will plan their survival kit with simple everyday materials that the teacher or parents will provide. Can also be done on paper or on powerpoint. Links to websites that can help students pick a location, find survival items, and plan the trip are provided.

There are no "worksheets" and all the planning is done for you. All you have to do is print materials, facilitate, and watch your students enjoy learning.

Planning Guide
Print Hiking Plans Sheets for students to take notes on during their research.

Questioning~ You can start this in a variety of ways. I have provided some question cards that you can present to your students. I have also provided two blank cards so that students can generate their own questions (laminate and use dry erase markers for future use). If possible you might want to schedule a short hike and challenge students to find out what things they would need to bring and to make a plan.
Researching~ Introduce the differentiated reading passages (which can be used for close, repeated readings). Students will find out some information about what they need and why they need to make a plan. Also included are links and QR codes to pages that will help students find out what they need for a day of hiking.
Planning~ Students will complete their plans using the planning sheets that they already have.
4. Creating ~ Students will put together kits that have everything they need for a typical day hiking trip.
Ways to Facilitate:
Ask parents to donate items (especially if you going to actually go on a hike).
Bring in catalogs/sales papers from outdoor stores.
Students can create a slideshow by copying and pasting items from REI website onto power point slides.

5. Improving ~ This is a testing phase of the student product. It would be done best if they actually used the kit and went on a hike. They may find they took too much or not enough and want to change the contents of their kit.
6. Present ~ Students will present their “survival kits” to the class.
Ways to facilitate:
Students can create a power point slide show.
Students can create a drawing and description using “My Hiking Survival Kit” printable that has been edited after improvements.
Students can create a magazine advertisement (a template is included but they can do from scratch as well.
Students can make an infomercial if classroom has recording capabilities.
Students can give oral presentation.
