This is a hands-on unit full of activities relating to raising insects in the classroom. Students may choose from three insects which are easy to obtain from farm and garden supply websites, or even on Amazon. In the introduction, students are asked to do a little research on their insect, and then compose a persuasive paragraph to convince their teacher that their choice is best.
There is a single-point rubric included for scoring second- and third-grade level writing. Once the choice has been decided and the insects arrive (as eggs or larvae), you may continue this project in any number of ways.
In addition to the introductory writing/voting activity, this document includes a bar graph to show the scores for the winning insect, a worksheet to complete about the chosen insect's natural habitat, a page for recording observations and predictions as the insects grow, a KWL page and a Venn diagram for taking notes about insect life cycles, some suggestions for other activities, and links to further information about each insect.
This word document is fully editable, so feel free to customize it for your classroom.
