We always hear the question, "but when will I ever use this in real life?" Challenge based learning, or an inquiry approach as used in this project, makes research, writing, reading, and other tasks directly applicable to the real world, helping students see how these skills transfer beyond school and also encouraging students to begin thinking about how to get involved in their communities and try to make positive changes. This project also guides students to create their own goals and time frames to accomplish their individual projects, giving them more responsibility in their academic process.
Some of my students interviewed local businesses, others spoke with local attorneys, some made presentations and went to local grade schools to talk to younger kids about self-esteem, others changed the juvenile detention system and got more organizations involved to allow juvenile delinquents to volunteer at their places of business instead of time in juvie, and many many more ideas that positively affected our community.
This project includes:
- Calendar of tasks for students and teacher
- Lesson plans to move through the project
- Multiple step process with worksheets and activities to help students move forward and stay on task with their respective projects
- Rubrics for the entire project and smaller pieces
- Much, much more!
The document itself is a Word document, so you can adjust the various worksheets and materials to fit your own needs.
