With this Project Based Learning Unit on the Human Body Systems we focused on six main systems. I teach third grade, but you could adapt this for many different grades as well.
This was divided into three separate parts, so you could do one “part” a week and spread this into three weeks if you wanted. We spent three days per section.
First, we focused on the body system and the students researched about their system, wrote about it, then created a 3-D system. We used wood donated by our local Home Depot, but our original plan was cardboard.
We spent three days on diseases and illnesses within those systems. Students studied case files, chose one of those illnesses to focus on, researched and wrote about it, then created a technology presentation on that illness.
After that we spent three days on cancer. I felt this was important because our students hear it every day, but don’t really know what it is or does to the body. Each cooperative learning group researched cancer and wrote about it then created 3-D cancer cells using jello and other objects.
We had so many local physicians, surgeons, and other health related professionals come and speak to our students and it was fantastic!
I've included daily schedules and lesson plans, pictures of projects, and assessments for scoring/grading.
