This is a complete unit for "Romeo and Juliet" that makes real world and cross curricular connections. It starts with a chart listing different mental illnesses, students are required to research their causes, symptoms, and cures. There are given links students can use to conduct their research, but there is also a credible sources resource that students can use if they choose to research on their own (for our more advanced learners).
Then students will assume the role of a psychiatrist tracking two "patients" throughout the play keeping in mind the disorders they researched. After each act they will create a psychiatrist journal for their patients based on given requirements.
The final writing assignment is a formal diagnosis on one of their "patients" based on the patients sign and symptoms. Their end goal is to help cure the patient. Their is a guided writing outline and an argumentative rubric attached.
This assignment allows students to analyze character in a creative and real world way.
