This is a project that I use with my biology students. I begin the process by explaining that each student in my class works for a biotech company and must attend Mrs. Bailey's DNA Technology Conference.
Each student must present at the conference his/her DNA Technology topic (Powerpoint or Prezi) and take notes on the other attendees' presentations. The reason for taking notes is that their employer (the Biotech firm) is expecting feedback on what they have learned at the conference.
Students are encouraged to dress up when they present. Anyone in the class with a laptop or iPad is encouraged to bring it in to take his/her notes. The students feel "professional" as they type away on their technology at Mrs. Bailey's Conference. I arrange my lab desks into one large table and bring in water and hard candy/mints for the conference table. The kids love it!
Included in my lesson:
1. Project Description
2. Grading Checklist/Rubric
3. Project Topics
4. Recommended Websites
5. Recommended template for Note-taking
NOTE: The 7x7 Rule of formatting a Powerpoint - Each slide can have no more than 7 words across and and a maximum of 7 lines down. This is done to make the slides easier for the audience to read and to encourage students to be succinct.
This is one of my favorite projects! ENJOY!!
