Thank you for considering purchasing Project PEACE – Peer Mediation Evaluation Packet. This packet is designed to provide you with everything needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the peer mediations and the program.
I began my first peer mediation program 18 years ago. This packet includes forms I have developed over the years. Peer mediation programs may differ in set up such as mediators in each classroom, or mediators for each grade level. No matter how you choose to set up your program, you will find the forms in this packet helpful.
I set my program up to have trained mediator in each grade level. When I was in a middle school, I had 6th, 7th, and 8th grade mediators. At the elementary school, I had 4th and 5th grade mediators because that was where we saw most of the conflicts occurring.
The students are trained to help their peers resolve conflicts peacefully using lessons in communication and conflict resolution. If a student is having a conflict with another student, they can request mediation by completing a mediation request form. The peer mediators then ask the other student in conflict if they would agree to try to solve their conflict in peer mediation.
When the students come to the Mediation Station, they meet with 2 peer mediators. We also have a recorder that takes notes. The disputants are both given a chance to tell their side of the story. Once all of the information is given, we ask the students to discuss how they feel about the situation. A lot of times the students do not realize how each other feel about the conflict. The next step is for everyone to brainstorm solutions to the problem. There can be many kinds of solutions as long as they are reasonable. Then the students choose the solutions they like the best and are willing to do. The final step is to come up with solutions to prevent this from happening again. Usually students like coming to mediation because it gives them a time and a place to work things out, as well as, there is someone there who actually listens.
Project PEACE is designed to help students discover peaceful avenues to resolve their conflicts. Students who are in a dispute will be able to have their problems mediated by their own peers using peaceful conflict resolution techniques. As a result, students will be able to look to peers for proper methods of handling situations. Furthermore, conflict resolution should permeate throughout the school resulting in increased peaceful resolutions.
