PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Whether it’s real politicians today, or William Shakespeare’s imaginary politician Prospero, people in power spin facts to carefully craft their image and message. In this project, students learn about spin, gain practice in the skill with a modern day scenario, and then apply their new knowledge to create an original work of spin defending either Prospero or Antonio in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In addition to the original work of spin, students write a reflection in which they analyze how their project demonstrates spin; why they chose to include the various elements of the project; and provide an answer to the question, Should those in power always tell the truth?

The project also includes a rubric.

This lesson meets the following Common Core Standards: 1) Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. 2) Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. 3) Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

Required materials: Photocopier.

Note: Before engaging in the scenario, I showed a clip from The Daily Show, which regularly exposes spin from a range of politicians and news outlets, and we discussed what and how the show exposed what it did. The materials for this project do include anything about this preactivity.
