This is an award winning project where students learn about volcanoes located around the world. After learning about viscosity of magma in volcanoes, students research a given volcano in a group of 3-4 and put together a PowerPoint presentation that will be presented in class. Students will also research the volcanic hazards associated with their particular volcanic area.
Students will also put together either a 2 dimensional cross section or three dimensional model of their volcano, correctly labeling the specific types of igneous intrusive and extrusive rocks associated.
Students will also be able to explain what specific type of tectonic boundary is associated with this volcano. I use this project as a spring board into my plate tectonics unit in my advanced geology class. It does hit upon the California State Science Standards for earth science.
