Product Description
Slave Ann Clark escaped from her owner in South Carolina and made her way to Canada via the URR (Underground Railroad) Who helped her in this illegal endeavor?

Students research one of the historical characters and role play that character. Some are abolitionists, who may or may not have helped a slave escape to Canada. Some pro-slavery and want to ferret out who did. In the process, students experience life in pre-Civil War America, examine both sides of the slavery issue, examine maps and use critical thinking to discover (or keep secret) how Ann Clark escaped.

A number of classroom activities to prepare students or as supplementary extention assignments and a grading rubric are included.in the resource. This can also be used as a mystery game with NO student assignments or research.

A few of the characters included are: Dr. Thomas Bayne, John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Abigail Goodwin, William Lloyd Garrison, Maria Weston Chapman and Angelina Grimke Weld, Lucretia Mott, Dred Scott , Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.

The director packet contains a brief overview, rationale for using as a teaching tool and the national standards of learning addressed with this activity, suggestions, hints for using this as a public performance event, Invitation to the activity, rules of the game, opening statement, arrest warrant, internet resource lists, primary source document (authentic letter from Garrison to Stowe), 29 character dossiers (not all need to be used).
