The Toxic Ooze Mystery is loosely based on the chemical accident at Love Canal in the 1970’s. The residents of Glenhill have been experiencing greater than expected health problems for several years. A mystery 55 gallon drum shows up. Then another and another. What secrets do these rusting containers hold? Can the residents (students) themselves piece together the evidence?
Package includes 23 character dossiers, unit plan with 4+ lessons, assignments (tiered), PPT, for using, numerous individual and group writing and research, maps, clues and links to additional online resources.
Using this interdisciplinary project (PBL) allows students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. This project invites students to experience watershed contamination as victims, investigators and the agents of this disaster loosely based on the Love Canal problem in the 1970’s. Students research, read, write, role play and collaborate not only with science and language arts but involving civics and government as well.
