Here is my latest ready-to-print and hand-out grade 5 science project on forces. In this project, students are expected to research an existing structure (preferably a bridge or a tower of some sort), to analyze the forces acting upon it and to re-create their own model of that structure using recycled material. During their presentation in front of the class, we will then test to see how solid their structure is.
This project comes with an introduction on forces, a short glossary of scientific terms that students should be able to incorporate in their writing, a list of suggestions of popular bridges and towers, guiding questions to help them and reflection questions to further their thinking. Students are also given clear guidelines of how to write a bibliography at the end and they are informed that "Wikipedia" should not be one of their sources.
Rubric and checklist included. Tried and tested for a number of years on my grade 5's.
