Product Description

It's one thing to UNDERSTAND a prompt: the true question, the action verbs, and all parts of the directions. It's something else to brainstorm all of the perspectives, counterarguments, and connections possible to come up with a complex response!

Enter my brainstorming activity. This CCSS-aligned handout (W.5), adaptable for multiple grade levels and writing strands/assignments, challenges students to think beyond personal experience to the rest of what's possible within a prompt, using the acronym “BIASED”.

This activity works best for argumentative writing but is also for informative pieces and can be great review before a standardized test (without feeling like it). This is great practice for the ACT and SAT essays as well.

Handout includes three practice prompts that guide students from whole class discussion to small groups to independent practice (which could be used as an exit ticket or other formative assessment). There is also an answer key and a graphic organizer that can be applied to any writing assignment.
