This product is GREAT for tutors of reading, classroom volunteers, aides, para educators, parents or even YOU as a teacher!
The quick guide to helping readers figure out tricky words they come to when they are reading, is an essential literacy tool! You can print, fold and laminate. This prompting card follows the method of “Pause, Prompt & Praise!” It is essential that we are developing skillful, strategic problem solvers as readers. No more telling the child to “sound it out!”. As a child reads and comes to a word he/she doesn’t know, we need to wait (PAUSE) to give the child time to reflect and think about strategies s/he can use to figure it out. Then we question (PROMPT) to help guide them in solving for the unknown word and lastly and critically important is the compliment (PRAISE) of what the reader did well. Our feedback, if it is done positively and constructively, will help the reader grow in their independence. We all have a range of learners no matter what grade we teach! If you have beginning readers or Second Language Learners, than this is the tool for you!
This is an excellent tool to give to parents at Back To School night after you have taught the strategies so that when they are reading with their child, they will have this handy reference to help troubleshoot issues! This should also be part of a toolbox for anyone who reads with children, whether it be a volunteer or a classroom assistant or aide.
This product was adapted from the method of Pause, Prompt and Praise, coupled with prompts from Jennifer Serravallo’s 2015 hit book, The Reading Strategies Book-Over 300 Strategies
