Let kids create their own sentences using personal pronouns and verbs. Kids love to feel they are actively engaged, and this activity lets them do just that. The verb tense mats are designed with different frames to help kids remember what forms they are using. Cue cards are in different colors to remind them of the different rules for using the verb forms.
This set includes:
5 Cover cards for organizing
5 Cue Cards for Tense Markers
24 He Cards
24 She Cards
12 They Cards
36 Singular Verb Cards
24 Plural Verb Cards
Sorting mats for She, He, and They
7 Verb Tense Mats (includes 2 blank mats)
Laminate all pages. Cut small person, action, cue cards and cover pictures individually. Use cover cards to keep organized. Cut verb tense mats in half. Keep the She/He sorting mat as one.
1. Boy and girl pictures can be sorted on She/He mat. If it’s a boy, we say “he”; if it’s a girl, we say “she”.
2. Verb Tense Mats (Use Cue cards to reviewe the rule prior to the activity to remind the student what words or word parts they should use. They are color coded.
--to focus on verb tense, a person can be placed on the first square, and the verb cards can be varied on each trial.. The child points to each square on the mat, and says the correct sentence structure after a prompt such as, “What is happening?”, “What is she doing?”, “What did the boy do last night?”, “What will the girl ride?”, “What does a boy do when he is tired?”
--to focus on pronouns, the person card can be changed each time, and the action card can remain the same.
--to focus on both pronouns and verb tense, the person cards and the action cards can be changed each time. Kids enjoy changing the cards themselves.
--When students do not need the visual word cues, blank tense mats are provided. The mat with 3 squares still requires the student to recognize that there is something added to the verbs. The 2-square mat removes the reminder cue for the additional morpheme or word part.
