There are two basic reasons for using the present perfect (past-to-present): to show that a situation began in the past and still continues into the present, and to show a situation that happened at an unspecified time in the past. Confusing the tenses can be problematic for students who often skip that important proofreading stage before they hand in their assignments and essays. Once they have learned to identify their own unique patterns of error in their writing, practicing those necessary skills with improve their fluidity, confidence, and ultimately earn them that good grade. This handout includes a description, explanation and exercises about creating the correct forms of present perfect and past perfect tenses that increase in difficulty to allow the student to become an accomplished writer.
