Looking to extend Animal Farm into the read world, or need a mini-unit that meets common core standards while fully engaging the students? Look no further. This unit can be performed within 2 weeks, with possibilities for lengthening or shortening. It contains:
-lecture slides for propaganda used in advertising
-a commercials practice
-BP Oil Spill campaign activity
-instructions for an argumentative marketing proposal
-rebranding project option
This is a great activity to use during Superbowl, since most kids pay attention to those advertisements.
How I do it:
-after Animal Farm, deliver lecture in an interactive way (with the slides that I elaborate upon/the psychology of advertising/ students toss out examples/ paste magazine ads around the room and have student groups try to identify propaganda techniques)
-assign commercials activity as homework
-do BP Oil as a class activity the next day
-have student groups create Google presentation with each part of their proposal on a slide (for easy grading)
-there's an option to have students create a whole campaign containing a print ad and commercial
The kids love this! They bubble over with examples, bristle at how they're being manipulated by advertisers, and relish looking at their world with new eyes.
