This project assignment will get your students thinking more deeply about the text and how propaganda is used in dystopian societies to control citizens. After reviewing the different types of propaganda (fear, name calling, loaded words/glittering generalities, repetition, testimonial, and bandwagon) with your students, they will be ready to apply that knowledge to the novel Anthem by finding two examples of propaganda in their society. Students also get to express their creativity by creating an advertisement for the propaganda they have found. In this assignment, samples of the explanation paragraph and advertisement are included, in addition to a rubric for grading. This project can be completed after reading just the first chapter of the novel or the novel in its entirety!
