A fun sorting activity to help students practice the difference between common and proper nouns.
A mix of common and proper nouns are listed on the bellies of penguins.
If the noun on the penguin is a proper noun, the student will place a crown on the penguin's head.
When the students have given crowns to the all the proper penguins they will sort them: crowned penguins on one side, common penguins on the other.
Students can then see if they can spot the similarities amongst each group (i.e. proper nouns are all capitalized).
*Includes a sheet of blank penguins so the teacher has the option of allowing students to come up with their own nouns as well.
