Description

The Common Core Standards for Mathematics emphasize that students will use the Properties of Addition for fact fluency and problem-solving. Understanding and applying the Properties of Addition are part of achieving fluency with the addition facts. Students in 2nd and 3rd grade use these properties, which will also be important later for Algebra.

The PowerPoint contains three Properties of Addition:

  • The Commutative Property of Addition
  • The Associative Property of Addition
  • The Zero Identity Property of Addition

HOW IT WORKS

The presentation has many animations to help your students understand terms like commute and associate.

  • Each property is self-contained within the clear-cut presentation so that you can present each property separately and at your own pace.
  • Students can use a math journal or the printables to answer fundamental questions regarding each property.
  • Each slide has notes to let you know if it is fully animated and how to advance to the next slide.
  • Most slides have Presenter's Notes that have questions to encourage Mathematical Thinking.
  • Included are 14 printables used with the PowerPoint and as the follow-up.
  • There are three specific printables to go along with the PowerPoint presentation. Use the printables in place of a journal.
  • The printables provide for writing and practice of the Properties of Addition.
  • The printables can also be used for extra practice or as a quick assessment or exit ticket.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • PowerPoint Presentation with separate lessons on each of the Properties of Addition
  • 14 Printables that include
    • 1 Printables for each Addition Properties that coordinate with the PowerPoint for guided practice

    • 1 Frayer Model Printable for each of the Addition Properties
    • 1 Graphic Organizer of key vocabulary for the Addition Properties
    • 1 Addition Properties Glossary
    • 1 Page of Sentence Frames for each Addition Property

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
