This is a great way to teach students the Properties of Minerals and how to TEST for them. It is a HANDs-On LAB which can be done in 6 stations-- or at every table-- depending on how many supplies you have. Students make a CUTE foldable TEST book (so the LAB will fit into one page of their Journals!) with separate MINI sheets for each TEST. They choose one mineral/rock sample, and test for COLOR when wet vs. dry, LUSTER, STREAK, Hardness w/ Moh's Scale ( I included lots), Reaction to Vinegar, and then try to determine what they have with either Minerology4Kids.org or a 4pg Mineral KEY from Geology.com. All included!
My kids always enjoy this LAB because they can test just like GEOLOGISTS or Mineralogists!! The LAB only requires eyedroppers, hand lenses, streak plates (white & black if possible- or use black construction paper) & pennies, paper clips, glass, etc. for Moh's scale, and then, a bit of vinegar and water in cups.
As always-- I promise this isn't "Science Light," nor does it require a ga-zillion copies! One page per table for directions should be sufficient! It comes out as ALL STUDENT CREATED-- not like a copied workbook! I have included 3 great FREEBIES from my upcoming Minerals Complete Unit and Rock/Mineral SUPERSET-- please find my GraphiQ EXPLAIN Multimedia Presentation for Props of Minerals and my GraphiQ MAP (with and without Breakage- for differing state's standards) plus-- my popular Grading Rubric which can help you achieve a paperless classroom!! Thank you for your interest, and please let me know if I can help you with anything! I am posting new resources all of the time--so please check back with my store! Or simply follow me and it will automatically email you when I post a new product! I hope I can help you ROCK the Science in your Classroom!
Jana-- Science Rocks with Smalley!
P.S. If you EVER have an issue with a product, please send me a Question or Comment immediately with YOUR EMAIL-- so that I can both fix it and send it DIRECTLY TO YOU and include a bunch of FREEBIES for your trouble. (I'll reupload it also, but this takes a bit longer) This has only happened 2x in several years-- but I promise to make it right as soon as I possibly can-- hopefully that day! -- Jana
