Need an interactive notes page to teach physical properties of matter? This foldable notes page, which can be printed or used digitally, allows students to identify the physical properties of matter and how those properties are used to observe, identify, and classify matter. This notes page allows students to match rich images to to each property to help them build connections to the content. Not only do they learn basic information about each property of matter, they also think about how each one is represented visually and how we measure or observe each one. The foldable includes the following properties of matter: including physical state of matter, mass, magnetism, density, conductivity of heat and electricity, and solubility.

Big idea: The world around us is made of matter, and by knowing different physical properties of matter, we are able to measure, categorize, and describe the objects in our everyday lives. This introduction to the physical properties of matter provides the foundation for all studies in the physical sciences.

Core Disciplinary Ideas

This interactive notes page builds a foundation for the following core disciplinary idea:

• PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter

o Matter and Its Interactions: Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties (5-PS1-3)

Crosscutting Concepts: Scale, Proportion, and Quantity, Energy and Matter

Scientific and Engineering Practices: Developing and using models, constructing explanations (for science), obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Science Texas Essential Knowledge and Sills (TEKS)

5.5A - TSIET classify matter based on physical properties, including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, and gas), relative density (sinking and floating), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electric energy;

5.5B – TSIET demonstrate that some mixtures maintain physical properties of their ingredients such as iron filings and sand and sand and water.

5.5C – TSIET i identify changes that can occur in the physical properties of the ingredients of solutions such as dissolving salt in water or adding lemon juice to water.

Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. Examples of materials to be identified could include baking soda and other powders, metals, minerals, and liquids. Examples of properties could include color, hardness, reflectivity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, response to magnetic forces, and solubility; density is not intended as an identifiable property. Assessment does not include density or distinguishing mass and weight.
