Product Description

This is a set of two homework assignments that I use when teaching my unit on Matter and Change. The questions are designed to be thought-provoking and problem-solving in nature. Good homework assignments should offer reinforcement of concepts without turning into "busy work." The point of homework is to reinforce, review and strengthen the student's understanding of what is taught at school.

These homework assignments are appropriate for middle school science, physical science or high school chemistry. (Grades 7 - 10)

What is included in this resource?

  • Two homework assignments to use in your Matter unit. Includes 6 student pages.
  • Complete Teacher Guide and Answer Key (6 pages)

The first homework assignment (32 questions) covers the following topics:

  • Properties of Matter: What is matter? How does one describe the quantities of matter? Definitions of volume, weight, and mass.
  • Key definitions: Atom, molecule, element, compound, mixture.
  • All matter can be classified into three groups: Elements, compounds, and mixtures.
  • Differences between elements and compounds.
  • Characteristics of compounds.
  • Definition of mixture, homogeneous mixture, heterogeneous mixture.
  • Characteristics of mixtures.
  • Methods of separating mixtures into their individual components: Filtration, evaporation, decanting, the centrifuge, paper chromatography.
  • Three phases of matter: Solid, liquid, gas.
  • Distinguishing characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Students will compare and contrast pairs of terms.
  • Given examples, students will determine if substances are an element, compound, or mixture.
  • Given examples, students will classify mixtures as homogeneous or heterogeneous.
  • Students will make simple drawings showing the arrangements of atoms in solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Students will construct a concept map given a set of terms.

The second homework assignment (28 questions) covers the following topics:

  • Properties and Changes in Matter: Definition of the term “property” and why the properties of substances are important.
  • Differences between intensive and extensive properties.
  • Differences between physical and chemical properties.
  • Differences between physical and chemical changes.
  • Conservation of Mass.
  • Students will compare and contrast pairs of terms.
  • Given examples, students will determine if the example if a physical or chemical change.
  • Given examples, students will determine if a property if an intensive or an extensive property.
  • Given examples, students will determine if a characteristic is a physical or a chemical property.

You will receive both a Word document as well as a pdf form of each assignment.

All answers are included.
