Properties of Matter Second Grade Science Unit NGSS

This is an in-depth states and properties of matter unit with detailed, science lesson plans for second grade. Designed to excite your students' curiosity and connect prior knowledge, students learn through engaging, high-interest lessons with hands-on investigations and experiments.

Students are introduced to science practices, such as making observations, constructing explanations, using evidence to support a claim, and designing solutions to problems.

DISTANCE LEARNING: I have added directions for adapting and digitizing the student pages and Power Point lessons in this resource for distance learning and Google Classroom. All student activities are also available in a ready-made digital version.

Aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, commonly taught state science standards, and Common Core State Standards, this flexible unit can be taught over 10, 15, or 17 days depending on the number of experiments you choose to do.

During each lesson students are presented with engineering connections that enable them to understand how solids, liquids, and gases are used in their everyday lives. Students plan and carry out investigations and experiments, Turn and Talk with partner discussion questions and Write About It with science journal activities.

Assess each lesson with 2 quick check/exit ticket options in fill in the blank or short written response format. A unit assessment concludes the unit.
