Properties of Matter: A Big Science Stations Unit for properties of matter

This file includes 9 station activities about matter to use with upper elementary students. The centers focus on identifying properties of matter.

A lot of the stations are open-ended and may not have precise answers. Students are encouraged to think and analyze in order to draw conclusions about matter. Stations range in difficulty to help meet the needs of all students.

Stations:
Read It: Students read 5 information cards about relative density, solubility, mass, physical state, and electrical conductivity. Students identify the main parts from each reading.

Create It: Students follow directions to make a density column with water, a bead, a metal screw, corn syrup, and vegetable oil.

Tech It: Students watch two video clips and take online quizzes.

Match It: Students match property cards to the description cards of each property. Then, they complete a table describing each property.

Analyze It: Students analyze a student drawing of a density activity.

Draw It: Students draw an illustration to represent five properties of matter.

Explore It: Students conduct tests to identify what a mystery substance is (baking soda). They identify color, texture, solubility, and reaction with vinegar.

Explain It: Students make observations based on a chart listing properties of 6 mystery substances. Then, they choose 3 to identify possible substances they could be.

Sort It: Students sort property cards of copper and sugar into the correct part of a Venn Diagram. They check their work using the key, copy the Venn Diagram, then describe the properties they have in common in a brief paragraph.
