Product Description

In this activity, students observe properties of matter at eight stations. Each station focuses on a different property and provides opportunities to apply Science and Engineering Practices and discuss Crosscutting Concepts. Students document their work in their Properties of Matter Stations Lab workbook and complete reflection questions to help synthesize their learning.

After students have completed their stations, they are ready to identify their Mystery Substance using what they have learned about the various properties of different materials. Students construct a written Claim-Evidence-Reasoning response to the question, What is the substance?

This lab was designed for the Elaborate phase of the 5E Model, which expects students to practice skills and concepts independently and apply what they have learned to new but similar situations.

This lab prepares students for Next Generation Science Standard 5-PS1-3, and several of the lab stations could very easily be modified to create a three dimensional assessment for that standard. Science and Engineering Practices embedded into this lab include Planning and Carrying Out Investigations and Constructing Explanations. This activity pack provides a number of activities to emphasize the Crosscutting Concept of Scale, Proportion, and Quantity.
