Your students will learn about the physical properties of matter, the states of matter, and how matter changes state. This is a complete unit for teaching about matter, including an 8-page informational text. The unit includes teaching notes, pieces for the lapbook, a study guide, unit test, and a 71-slide PowerPoint! The unit includes 7 hands-on explorations with data sheets.
The Properties of Matter includes an 8-page informational text about the physical properties of matter, describing and comparing matter using physical properties, measuring mass and volume of solids and liquids, density, temperature, changing states, freezing, melting, evaporation, condensation, and more. This is a great way to practice close reading in the content areas. The informational text can supplement or replace your science textbook.
As your students read and learn about the physical properties of matter, this Properties of Matter Unit gives your students a way to show and practice what they have learned. They can complete 8 different pieces to make a lapbook about what they've learned about matter. These pieces are great for formative assessment as you work through the unit.
The unit includes suggested teaching notes to use as you go through the unit and the PowerPoint. Of course, you are always free to put your own spin on the unit! The PowerPoint doesn't have anything fancy to distract from the content. It just has great pictures that go along with the content in the text.
This unit contains 7 different hands-on explorations for your students to discover the properties of matter. All of the explorations use common materials you probably already have in your classroom. Each exploration comes with a Data Sheet for students to record and analyze their results. I call them "explorations" because only one activity is a true experiment using variables. The explorations include measuring mass, measuring volume of solids using rulers, measuring volume of solids using graduated cylinders, measuring and comparing mass and volume, making chocolate chips change from solid to liquid and back again using body heat and ice cubes, and finding the volume of a gas in a balloon. The experiment compares the evaporation times of rubbing alcohol and water.
The informational text is perfect for meeting your Common Core Reading Standards!! I wrote this Properties of Matter Unit because I couldn't find anything appropriate for my third-graders! I wanted something that incorporated information that wasn't too simple. I wanted to be able to meet the new demands of the Common Core for informational text. This text will provide your students with a rigorous text, but it's written in a way that will allow your third, fourth, and fifth grade students to be successful in reading and comprehending the information.
This unit only addresses changes in state and physical properties of matter. Chemical and physical changes and mixtures and solutions are going to be addressed in another unit coming soon!
