In this lesson students will identify a mystery mineral using only its physical properties. This will prove hard to do when the specimens are of similar color. In this lesson students will begin to see the value of determining the hardness of a mineral specimen. Students will be introduced to the tools used to perform a scratch test (fingernail, copper penny, steel nail, and paper clip).
