The Distributive Property, Commutative Property, Associative Property, Zero Property, and Identity Property are all included in this unit for third grade students when they are first learning about each of the properties! This aligns with 3.OA.5. Teaching students multiplication properties in 3rd grade is one of the most difficult concepts I teach all year.

Here's what is included:

This unit also includes a mini-lesson or interactive notebook page with photos showing you how to help students glue the notes into their notebooks. This gives students something to reference when they get stuck or need help while doing homework at home.

I created this unit to help my students better grasp properties with eight worksheets that help them practice the distributive, commutative, and associative properties.

There's also a game called "Elf Land Properties" where students have to figure out which elves are good and which are "bad" using three properties (Distributive, Commutative, and Associative).

The second game includes 24 property task cards about all 5 properties. Each time a student gets an answer correct, they get to try and collect spaces on the gameboard in their corresponding color.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
