### Description

The Common Core Standards for Mathematics emphasizes that students will use properties of multiplication for fact fluency and for problem-solving. Understanding and applying the multiplication properties are one part of achieving fluency with the multiplication facts. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades need to understand and use these properties. They are also important later for Algebra.

WHY USE THESE ACTIVITIES?

Use the six activities to practice the Commutative, Associative, Zero and Identity Properties of Multiplication.

• The six practice activities can be done in a small group, whole class or put in centers or even used for intervention.
• save time with these ready-made printables - just print and duplicate
• use them as differentiated centers or for general math centers

HOW IT WORKS

As you begin teaching the Properties of Multiplication

• use the printables to reinforce or re-teach them.
• Put some of the activities into math centers or use them in small group instruction.
• It's important that students know how these properties work and why they are necessary to use them.
• Each activity can be done independently by the student once the Properties of Multiplication have been introduced and taught.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

• Flap Book to match a property with examples and a definition.
• Multiplication Mini-Book of 12 pages with information and questions to spur critical thinking about the properties.
• Bookmarks (color and b/w) for students to use as a study guide.
• Venn Diagrams (2) to complete to get students to think critically about the similarities and differences between the properties.
• Multiplication Hero! Fill in, cut out and tape it to your chest to become Multiplication Hero! Quiz each other on the properties of multiplication.
• Commutative Property Match Up. Students use a work board and manipulate arrays and multiplication sentences to match up corresponding arrays using the Commutative Property. Great as a center, small group or whole class.

All printables are black and white printing and duplicating.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
