Product Description
My Properties of Multiplication Sorts allow you to formatively or summatively assess the properties of multiplication understanding of your students.

This cut, sort and paste activity is engaging and wonderful when done with partners, but may also be a good individual work activity or a center activity. Using it as an interactive journal entry would be another great use of this resource!

I love for my students to work with partner to sort each set of cards after I've taught them about the properties of multiplication. The students work through each set of card options as they become successful with each previous set. Here are the options:
A: This set includes basic number sentences that model the identity, commutative, associative and distributive properties of multiplication. The students simply sort them into the correct property category.
B: This set includes basic number sentences; however, I have removed on number from each number sentence to add more difficulty. The students need to first figure out which property is being demonstrated and then they must fill in the missing number to correctly complete the number sentence.
C: This set includes symbols instead of numbers that model the four properties of multiplication. The students simply sort them into the correct property category.
D: This is the most challenging set of cards. This set includes symbols instead of number and some have been removed. The students must identify which property is being demonstrated and then must fill in the missing symbol to correctly complete the number sentence.

I love to have my students mount their finished products on construction paper and hang them throughout the room. They find this activity engaging, challenging, and fun!

I've also added Solve It! worksheets to this resource. After the students have finished sorting through all of the option cards, give them a Solve It! worksheet to assess their ability at identifying the properties in a new format and their ability to solve the equations using the properties.
