Go beyond simply giving notes from the board. Students learn so much more from discovering math concepts than being told math concepts.
In this activity students will work with a partner to come up with their own definitions of 6 properties of numbers. Instead of copying the notes from the board or a textbook they will consider examples of equations that demonstrate the property and use these examples to write a definition. This can then lead to a class discussion of the properties and how they are used.
Also included are two bonus worksheet that students can use to practice the 6 properties. In the first worksheet students will match the descriptions of the properties with their names. In the second worksheet students will have to apply and identify the properties of numbers to complete equations. (I have included a sheet with a word bank and one without for each worksheet.)
