In this lab, students are exploring to see which soil holds water the best and the worst. (I divided my class into 6 groups with the materials for each on a tray). Groups are each given six clear plastic cups (one with loam, one with humus, one with sand, and three with a ½ cup of water with red food coloring). Before the students complete the water race, students should write descriptions of the different materials (loam, humus, and sand). When told, three students in the group will dump the red water into the cups with soil. Students should then observe to see what happens to the water (it is fun to make it seem like a race, “Ready, Set, Go!” “Which cup will the water reach the bottom of the quickest?”). Students should observe and record the results. I have included key vocabulary, lesson description, common core standards, and a graphic organizer.
