This products includes a two part 900 slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), built-in hands-on activities with directions and follow-up questions, challenge questions, built-in quizzes with answers,8 page homework, answer keys, lesson notes, many great video links, games, and much more.
This PowerPoint begins with a really neat hands-on activity called "Swirly Milk". Students fill a plate with whole milk and place four different colored drops of food coloring around the edges. Students then touch the milk with detergent and the colors form a swirling pattern. This is a neat beginning of the PowerPoint activity. An explanation to the activity occurs over a series of slides. The Properties of Water PowerPoint is then introduced and defined. Some water basics are then described. The structure of water is presented and students create a step by step drawing of a water molecule. The picture eventually forms a mouse with the ears being the hydrogen etc. A couple of challenge questions has the students use their drawing. Polarity is then addressed and students perform a number of simple activities. Teacher passes out wax paper and a drop of water on each. Students move the water drop around. Students also create a mini motorboat out of a Popsicle stick. Another activity has the teacher use an overhead and Petri-dish. Teacher places a drop of oil on the water and it moves around on the overhead. Oil droplets combine. Teacher then uses food coloring. A segment of the PowerPoint discusses oil spills and a case study of the Gulf Spill occurs over a series of slides. Cohesion is described and a neat activity has the class try to stand in a Hula-Hoop in the middle of the classroom. This gets the students acting as water molecules clinging to each other. They can only complete the challenge if the reach across the hoop and use each other to hold on to. An activity occurs that has students try to place as many drops of water on a penny as they can. They are asked to make a series of drawings. Adhesion is then described in a series of slides. An activity that has a drop of water placed on the lab table and then a glass slide is placed over it. The drop of water travels between the table and the glass. Capillary Action is described and an activity has a celery stick placed into colored water. The food coloring moves up the celery. Chromotography is explained and an activity -has students make a black dot with a Vis-A-Vis Marker on a coffee filter or chromatography paper. When the students place the bottom of the paper in the water the black dots separates into all of it's colors along the paper. An explanation and questions with answers follow. Surface tension is described and students try to float a paper clip. Hydroplaning in an automobile is discussed as are water striders. The high specific heat of water and its uses are described. A neat activity has students place drops of water in an ice cube tray (one drop in the first box, two in the second, and so on) The trays are placed in the refrigerator for ten minutes. They are quickly removed and students observe which ones are frozen and which are not. They then observe which melt the first. A series of challenge questions follow that has students arrange a sequence of pictures into the correct order of which will freeze first / and then boil first. Global ocean currents are described. A picture of the Arctic is shown and students are asked to explain what is so important about this picture. They learn that water exists as a solid, liquid, and gas on planet Earth. Water has a neutral pH and after a series of challenge questions students learn the pH scale in a step by step process. A neat activity has students test common acids and bases with litmus paper. The activity allows for testing with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide if teacher is comfortable. Universal Solvent is then described and why that is important to life. Students then learn about solutes, solvents and solubility. An activity has students make beverages. After learning about mixtures, they take a quiz to identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. This is a really neat PowerPoint full of great hands-on activities that are simple and effective. This PowerPoint balances activities with bring it back to center learning. Please see my entire Water Molecule Unit described below before purchasing this PowerPoint.
This PowerPoint includes critical notes (Red Slides), exciting visuals, challenge questions, activities with directions and more. Text is usually placed at the top of the slide so it can be read from all angles of a classroom. Color coded slides, as well as a shade technique is used to increase student focus and allows the teacher to control the pace of the lesson. These PowerPoints are meant to be as interactive as possible and ask many questions, provide built-in opportunity to review material, explain directions to activities, and much more. Transition effects are never used.
