Students will explore the properties of water by rotating through different stations. Students can be grouped by ability level or mixed groupings depending on teacher preference and resources available. This lesson plan should take about 2.5hours to complete. All student hand-outs are included. This lesson also includes two lab demos for students to complete and a plethora of interactive notebook materials.
Explain the importance of the chemical and physical properties of water that make it vital to life and help organisms maintain homeostasis.
• Chemical properties:
o Explain how water’s polarity causes it to form hydrogen bonds
o Explain how water can act as an acid and as a base
• Physical properties:
o Explain how the density of ice can affect organisms living in or around water
o Describe the significance of water’s ability to dissolve many substances on the
transport of nutrients and waste move within cells.
o Describe how water’s cohesive and adhesive properties impact living things in
relation to surface tension and capillary action.
