Proportional Pictures is a hands-on math project that helps students to discover the relationship between the perimeter and area of two similar figures. Students discover that when they increase the size of their scale drawing by a factor of three, the perimeter also increases by a factor of three, but the area increases by a factor of nine (3 x 3).
Math Content: Perimeter and Area of Similar Figures
Suggested Grade Level: 5th - 8th
Time Required: About 2 class periods
Materials Needed: Colored pencils/markers, string
Teacher Testimonial: Since I created this lesson I have used it many times with 6th and 7th grade students. The students enjoy drawing their original figure, transforming it into a similar figure using a 3 to 1 scale, and then comparing the perimeter and area of the two figures. The finished projects make a great display for the classroom in addition to teaching important math concepts!
Proportional Pictures includes:

1 Proportional Pictures math worksheet
1 Proportional Pictures math worksheet answer key
