Here's a collection of well known titles of short stories and novels [Zlateh the Goat, The Circuit,The Truth About Dragons, Sound of Summer Running, The Phantom Tollbooth, and Tuck Everlasting,The Cay,The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate,The Midwife’s Apprentice,The View From Saturday] to use as students continue to practice "prose constructed writing responses for narrative writing tasks." You will find a prompt for each short story and novel worded in the language used by PARCC. The suggested passages are rich in language and represent sophisticated vocabulary, writing, and character predicaments. This is really an important writing exercise for all "5th or 6th grade students, and older". Whether students are familiar or not with the specific literature given, having your class attempt one prompt per day or one prompt per week will give them the 30 minute practice to "read" the passage at a reasonable rate, and then to move to the "writing" component of the exercise.These may be used to teach constructed response for narrative writing, or use as a quiz or test. Use the generic State rubric when scoring or simply have students score their work. In addition, not all writing needs to be scored, it is the practice that is needed. Another technique is to run off three copies [not showing student names] and have students discuss the writings and identify characteristics of strong work, etc.
