The author is a retired lawyer, instructor and textbook author.

The presentation includes the following material:

In 1661 the Perry family were brought to trial and hanged. In 1662, William Harrison walked back into Chipping Camden, alive and well. The 72 year old man said he had been set upon, stabbed, kidnapped, put aboard a ship, and sold in a Turkish slave market. He claimed he later escaped and caught a ship back to England. Nobody believed this outlandish story.

John Perry, Richard Perry and Joan Perry were hanged as punishment for a crime which they did not commit. Every thing else about this case remains a mystery and it is called the Camden Wonder. Centuries later, it is this kind of case which happens from time to time which makes it problematic for juries to issue convictions when there is no corpse in a murder case.

Today, forensic science has so advanced that if a vestige of the body is recovered, that can be enough to convince a jury. DNA evidence needs very little of the actual body for testing. However, our focus is the cases where there is no body, no body part, but only other circumstantial evidence.

Dr. Robert Bierenbaum. The convincing piece of evidence was that Bierenbaum hadn't told the police that he had taken an airplane out for a two-hour flight on the day his wife disappeared. Moreover, although airport records later verified the trip, it appeared he had attempted to alter the flight log.

Thomas J. Capano, a married lawyer from Wilmington, Delaware, was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in 1996. Capano’s undoing was that he involved his brother Gerry, in disposing of her body. With his brother’s help, he dumped her body in the Atlantic Ocean.

Natalee Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen by her classmates outside Carlos'n Charlie's in a car with locals Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. The three men said they dropped her off at her hotel and denied knowing what became of her. The police were never able to get any of the three to change their stories or to turn on one another. There is no body, no weapon, no crime scene, no motive, etc., A further complication was that Holloway and her classmates were wildly drunk during most of their stay. The problem this presents is that drunk people frequently come to harm on their own. Many drunk people have drowned or wandered into sink holes or caves in Aruba.
