This PowerPoint was designed to support these 5th grade NGSS Science Standards:

5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.

5-ESS2-2. Describe and graph the amounts and percentages of water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth

5-ESS3-1. Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

This PowerPoint begins by introducing each of the 4 spheres of the Earth: the geosphere, the biosphere, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. As each sphere is discussed, students are asked a variety of interactive questions to discuss with their peers. Some issues with each sphere are discussed and then followed up with actions students can take to protect each one. The PowerPoint culminates with a discussion of how the spheres interact, and 2 videos are included to sum up the concepts.

Notes for the teacher are included on almost every slide with suggestions on how to make the slides interactive. A notes page is included for students to complete throughout the PowerPoint or as an assessment.

Ideally, combining this product with hands on activities like the ones found in my Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Inquiry Unit would be best for developing a strong conceptual understanding of Earth's sphere's and how to protect them through several hands on activities.

This PowerPoint and the unit are available as a bundle at a discount. Check it out here.

NGSS5-ESS2-1
Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact. Examples could include the influence of the ocean on ecosystems, landform shape, and climate; the influence of the atmosphere on landforms and ecosystems through weather and climate; and the influence of mountain ranges on winds and clouds in the atmosphere. The geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere are each a system. Assessment is limited to the interactions of two systems at a time.
NGSS5-ESS3-1
Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
NGSS5-ESS2-2
Describe and graph the amounts of salt water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth. Assessment is limited to oceans, lakes, rivers, glaciers, ground water, and polar ice caps, and does not include the atmosphere.
