If your students can break down the seemingly complex process of protein synthesis into something an elementary student can understand, it should in turn help them understand the process better. This activity has worked well with my students. I have a block schedule and allot one week for my students to work on this project in class.

You could easily do this with a general biology class or an AP biology class.

I typically have my student assistants help put together the premade "books" by folding and stapling them together so students can quickly get to work on the design process.

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Assessment does not include identification of specific cell or tissue types, whole body systems, specific protein structures and functions, or the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
