This connection card activity (see details about connection card activities below) requires students to make connections between various components of protein synthesis. Students should have a basic understand of protein synthesis and the various term associated with that process before they begin this activity. Students will draw to cards analyze the terms and then make connections between them. They will use academic vocabulary to explain the connection verbally to their group. Students often memorize various aspects of protein synthesis and fail to understand the process as whole and how it relates to other cellular processes and components. This activity is aimed at helping students reach a higher level of understanding when it comes to protein synthesis.
Connection Card Strategy:
This learning strategy requires students make connections between various vocabulary terms associated with a common theme/topic. Students truly begin to understand, comprehend, and remember vocabulary when they make connections to other terms, content, and situations. This higher-order thinking vocabulary strategy also requires students to speak using academic vocabulary, which is a key component in helping English Language Learners comprehend science content as well as learn the English language. This strategy is an extremely effective vocabulary activity for all learners.
